Large, glabrous and deciduous trees, branches drooping. Leaves opposite, petiolate, coriaceous, glabrous; stipules large, lanceolate, interpetiolar and caducous. Flowers in compact, glabrous, terminal and solitary pedunculate capitula, ebracteate, united by confluent calyx tubes. Hypanthium obconic or tubular, teeth 5, linear-oblong or spathulate. Corolla tube long, tubular or funnelform, throat glabrous, lobes 5, long-linear, imbricate. Stamens 5, inserted in the mouth of corolla, filaments short, anthers ovate, linear-oblong, apiculate; disc obscure. Ovary basally 2- locular but 4-locular above, ovules numerous, placenta horizontal on 2-fid placentas; style filiform, exserted; stigma spindle-shaped. Fruit aggregate of capsules, many- to few-seeded, subcoriaceous, fruiting head rather fleshy. Seeds minute.

Large, evergreen tree with spreading branches. Leaves opposite, 12-30 cm x 6-10 cm, elliptic-oblong, ovate or ovate-cordate, thick and leathery, glabrous and shining above, pubescent beneath, prominently on midvein and large veins, rarely glabrous, apex acute to acuminate, margin entire, base obtuse, round, cuneate or cordate, lateral veins 9-11; petioles 2-4 cm. Inflorescence terminal, globose, peduncled head, 2.5-4.5 cm in diameter; peduncle small, ca. 1 cm long. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, epigynous, minute, orange-yellow in colour, fragrant. Calyx 5-6.5 mm long; tube 2-2.5 mm long; lobes 5, ca. 3.5 mm long, narrow, linear, oblong or spathulate, pale, pubescent. Corolla 1.3 cm long, funnelform; tube 10 mm long, broad near limb; limbs 5, ca. 3 mm x 1 mm, orange, linear oblong. Stamens on the throat of corolla tube, alternating with petal lobes; filaments short; anthers ca. 1.5 mm long, ovate to linear-oblong, apiculate, coffee coloured outside. Disc obscure. Ovary inferior, 2-locular at base and 4-locular above, ovules numerous; style filiform, exserted, ca. 13 mm long; stigma spindle- shaped, ca. 3 mm long. Fruit an aggregate of capsules packed into fleshy globose mass or head of 5-7.5 cm in diameter, yellow when ripe, edible; the capsule splits into 4 parts releasing seeds at maturity.
